Why you should join this experience:
A journey among places, landscapes and history: our train will take you on a discovery of Salento’s peasant civilization
and culture.
The route includes departure from Gallipoli to Tuglie, the town that hosts Museo della Civiltà Contadina del Salento (the Museum of Peasant Civilization of Salento), located in the 17th-century gardens of the Ducal Palace. This will be the first stop on an experiential route that will explore different eras, starting from the Middle Ages to the early 1900s.
You will then have access to an ancient Grotta Rupestre from medieval times, representing the first residential nucleus of Tuglie, where you can admire the dwellings as they once were! Here you will be introduced to the ancient craft of “Carparo,” along with the art of building star and barrel vaults. While the production of oil (lampante) will be explained directly inside an 18th-century Hypogeum Oil Mill, which houses the Olive Museum.
Next, you’ll visit a large Masseria from the 1800s where you’ll see a large oil mill, a winery/millstone for wine production, and the icehouse for storing ice.
It’s time for lunch: enjoy traditional local dishes at the Museum’s farmhouse. Here you can also have the chance to create homemade pasta with the housewives* and then enjoy it during lunch. * (optional)
A well-deserved break to relax in the gardens of Palazzo Ducale and then take a pleasant tour of the town’s historic centre, distinguished by the characteristic “case a corte” (courtyard houses) accompanied by the typical “pile” (tubs for washing clothes), cisterns and votive shrines.
A short walk on Montegrappa Hill will lead you to the “Furneddhri”: types of trulli similar to the Pajare that arise only in this part of Salento and that in Tuglie find their greatest concentration.
It’s time to return to the Museum of Peasant Civilization, where you’ll take the train to Gallipoli*, which will conclude this compelling experience!
